Our Story

The Stainland and District Community Charity was established in May 2023 to provide a multipurpose community centre for our local area. Stainland residents came together to decide on the name of ‘The Old Library Stainland’.
Our space is now an inclusive social hub. With a 125 year lease, the centre will provide a valuable community resource for generations to come.
Read the story so far below…
The Building
The building dates back to 1911, beginning as the Halifax Equitable Bank and then, in 1928, changing hands to Martins Bank. In 1979, the bank ceased trading for good. Calderdale Council bought the building and, thus, Stainland Library was created.
For many years the library was a hub for our community. As reading patterns shifted, and e-books became ever more popular, the Library shut it’s doors for good just before the Covid pandemic and the building fell into disrepair.

where we began
Stainland Mechanics was a purpose-built social and educational establishment in the village, built in 1884 and was used as a community centre up until 2010. The Mechanics has since been turned into apartments; the need for a new community space in the village was identified.
So, in 2021, Stainland and District Parish Council decided to undertake the Asset Transfer process of the old library from Calderdale Council with the view of developing it into the new community centre.
Refurbishment
There was significant deterioration in the fabric of the building. It was in dire need of attention and investment before we could get to the point of it being made safe and legal for re-opening. Refurbishment details included;
- Improved heating
- Roof repairs
- Replacement windows
- Repairs to external walls
- Replastering the front wall internally
- Complete refurbishment of a small room to convert into a kitchen.
- Redecoration throughout the building
- Floor resanded

What we aim to be now…
The main objectives for driving this project forward were;
- To provide support, leisure, and education for all community groups.
- To be a space for all to enjoy themselves and create new relationships.
- To offer support and a refuge to address loneliness and isolation amongst the mature and isolated community members.
- To offer engagement for young people to have a positive impact on the trajectory of their lives.
- To provide a safe, social environment for all, to be inclusive and open.
- To provide an affordable venue for community events, classes and activities.
